The government's 'Every Child Matters: Change for Children' strategy aims to ensure that every child, whatever their background or circumstances, has the support they need to:
Participation in sport and 'sporting activities' has been identified as having a unique role in supporting improved outcomes for children and young people. Sport plays a very positive role in the lives of children and young people, supporting them to stay healthy and develop important social and life skills.
The PE and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP) aims to offer children and young people in England at least five hours of high quality PE and sport every week (for those aged 5-16 years).By building on and improving the quality of existing PE and school sport opportunities available to young people in schools it is hoped that an increasing proportion of children will be guided into local sports national governing body (NGB) affiliated and accredited clubs. The strategy aims to promote a culture that enables and values the full involvement of every child and young person, whether as a competitor, volunteer, official or organiser. It is hoped that this will lead to a significant increase in the number of young people taking part in high quality club sport on a regular basis.
'The strategy' is delivered on a local level through collaboration between School Sport Partnerships, County Sports Partnerships (CSPs) (PDF, 28KB) and sports clubs accredited as meeting recognised national minimum standards such as Clubmark or equivalent operating standards by the NGBs to which they are affiliated.
