Kingsbury SSP Dance Festival 2011

Kingsbury School Sports Partnership Partnership Dance Festival

Wembley Town Hall, 18th March 2011

Brent town hall was transformed for one night only last week, as the Kingsbury School Sports Partnership hosted its annual Dance ~Festival. A showcase of all the dance talent the Partnership has to offer, both primary and secondary, the night was the culmination of months of hard work from school staff, School Sports Co-Ordinators (SSCo’s) and pupils.

In reference to its status as an Olympic Partnership in the run up to the 2012 Olympiad, the festival was set to a theme of ‘On Your Marks’, with dances inspired by Olympic themes, colours, ideals etc. Dances had been handpicked from SSCo family events throughout the Partnership within the last 2 months, creating a tiered selection process of proven engagement with partnership events, and high quality dances. This selection proved to be a key success for the partnership, exemplified by the diverse age, ability, and cultural groups represented on the night. With 17 dances on the programme, the venue was alight with the vibrant mix of culture and diversity that is a symptomatic reflection of Brent as a whole. This was re-enforced by a good turnout, with parents, teachers, performers and the Brent Mayor, Cllr Jim O'Sullivan, all in attendance and eagerly awaiting the performances.

From Ballet, to Bhangra, to Street dance, the dances were energetic and confident, and demonstrated every bit of hard work that had been put in by all concerned. When asked about their experiences of the night, participants and audience were unequivocal in their agreement that the night had been a resounding success. Student leaders from Kingsbury High School worked tirelessly alongside SSCo staff to ensure the smooth running of the event; hosted by Kingsbury PDM Chris Gibson and its Gold student sport ambassadors, whose work within the community revolves around promoting the Olympics in the Partnership’s primary and secondary schools (as part of the Partnership leadership academy run by the SSCo team). As the event drew to its close, Chris Gibson was keen to highlight “the significant contributions of all staff, SSCo’s, Sports leaders, and backstage staff for their work in making the event a success”, giving specific praise to Melissa Spero and Eric Windrich for their organisation of the venue, music, and admin for the event.

A true reflection of the progress that the Kingsbury High SSP continues to make with Brent Partnership schools.
